For nearly 25 years the Cherokee has been one of the most popular SUVs in the US. And now, the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is all set to be introduced in India on August 30. The manufacturer has confirmed that the Cherokee 2016 will debut along with its cousin the Jeep Wrangler. The car will be available in three trims: Limited, Summit, and the Cherokee SRT performance version.
But before the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee hits our roads, here are 9 things you can expect from the car.

Masculinity is the second name for Cherokee 2016. The car sports a glossy black front fascia along with the traditional six-tooth grille, flanked by slim automatic headlamps. With the strong lines, aggressive stance, and the massive haunches, the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be a head-turner. It will be available in six colours that include Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl, Billet Silver Metallic Clearcoat, Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl, Granite Crystal, True Blue Pearl, and Bright White.

The car is a whooping 4,828mm in length, 1,943mm in width, and 1,802mm in height. Its ground clearance is 206mm which makes the car ideal for Indian roads.
The higher trim Cherokee SRT is larger in length at 4,846mm, with 1,954mm width and 1,749mm height. The wheelbase of the car is 2,915mm along with a better 210mm ground clearance. All these make the car 18mm longer, 11mm wider, and 53mm shorter than the regular trim.
All versions of the car are fitted with 18 inch aluminium polished alloy wheels.

Targeted at the more upmarket segment, the 2016 Jeep Cherokee would be obviously more premium and spacious. Expect the car to offer more headroom and legroom for both the front and rear occupants. The boot capacity too would be larger. The rear seats in the US version of the car can be folded 60:40 or fully flat and the same is expected in the Indian trims. The dashboard has various gizmos, while the central console is ergonomically positioned. The large steering wheel of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2016 will house cruise and audio controls, and a multi-information display.

The Indian version of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee will probably be available in two powertrains: a 3.0 litre turbocharged EcoDiesel V6 (regular variant), and the 6.4 litre V8 HEMI petrol engine for the SRT performance option. While the first engine generates 240bhp of maximum power at 570Nm torque, the second one outputs 469.17bhp power at 630Nm torque. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed paddle-shift AT gearbox.
High on safety

In the US, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2016 is known for its non-compromising safety features and the same is likely to be replicated in India. The American version of the car has front parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a forward collision warning system (when it gets too close for comfort), power folding outside rear view mirrors, four-wheel anti-lock braking system, electronic roll mitigation, electronic stability control (ESC), and all-wheel brake traction control system.

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee can tow up to 2,810kgs and that makes it a beast. No other premium SUV offers that pull. You really don’t need the V8 petrol engine unless you want to haul 3,350kgs. Jeep claims to have improved the Cherokee 2016 mileage though it is yet to reveal the actual figures. The US mileage of the car is 19mpg which would be around 8kmpl in India. That’s impressive given the size and weight of the car.
Adventure written all over

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is perhaps the best vehicle for off-road adventures. At least that’s what the car is largely used for in the US. Not that many Indian roads are any better than the backside of the moon, but the Cherokee 2016 is expected to tackle all with effortless ease, courtesy the high ground clearance, all-wheel drive, low rolling-resistance tyres, and the robust aluminium suspension components. The car’s rugged looks add to its image of a powerful off-roader. Take the car to all the places you never went before.
If company sources are to be believed, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2016 would be attractively priced for those hunting for a premium SUV. The Summit version will be available at ₹35 lakhs, while the Limited edition is likely to sell at ₹40 lakhs. The top-end SRT trim could be priced at ₹75-80 lakhs.
Tough for competitors

In India, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2016 is expected to provide tough competition to the Land Rover Discovery Sport, Audi Q5, and the BMW X5. While it’s too early to predict which of the cars will emerge as the segment leader, the sturdy Cherokee 2016 will undeniably be a contender to reckon with.
The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is arriving in India after an excruciatingly long wait. But the delay would be rewarding enough. There is a steady rise in demand for SUVs in India and the premium segment remains largely neglected. The 2016 Cherokee is expected to change all that. The car could be the apple’s eye for buyers looking for a hint of luxury seeped in ruggedness.
