With Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, the largest carmaker in India has broken the myth that a market leader in mass segment cannot dream to be a market leader in the premium segment. It started out as an outstanding product and has managed to attract buyers despite some really stiff competition. After its launch in 2014, the car got updates in 2015 in the form of SHVS hybrid system and RS variant. Automatic gearbox was also added later to woo the young crowd. And now this vehicle has beaten the segment leader Honda City to emerge as the best selling sedan in India. In the period between April 2016 and August 2016, Ciaz registered sale of 25,066 units while Honda City could sell just 21,251 units.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz gets a very elegant design with striking resemblance to Honda City from the rear. The company claims it to be the most aerodynamic product from its stable. The cabin has been fixed with top quality materials and offers utmost comfort. It is second to none when it comes to technological and safety features.
Talking about the specs of the car, the carmaker has struck with the same petrol/diesel engine options found on SX4 and now doing duty on Ertiga. Transmission system on duty is five-speed manual for petrol and diesel and automatic for petrol. The light weight of this car and torsional rigidity contribute towards an impeccable performance. The car is available in a total of 15 trims – 9 petrol and 6 diesel. The diesel model of the car is the first one to use SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle from Suzuki) technology that paves way for impressive mileage and makes it the most fuel efficient car in this segment.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz price starts at Rs. 7.77 lakh for the base petrol trim and touches Rs. 9.85 lakh for the top-end diesel trim. In contrast, the price of Honda City lies between Rs. 8.11 lakh to Rs. 12.43 lakh. Hyundai Verna, another one in the race, has its price between Rs. 7.88 – Rs. 13.10 lakh. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz price is one of the many reasons that make it a hot seller in this category.

Thanks to the supple suspension, Ciaz is a comfortable cruiser. Potent braking and good straight line stability are some of the plus points. The only downside is that the car tends to wallow when driven at high speeds and over less than perfect roads. The steering feels lively and the driving feel is very positive at low speeds. The impressive ground clearance of 170mm prevents this car from scraping its underbelly on a speed breaker.
A total power output of 90 bhp, emitted by the petrol engine, may not look enough on paper but Ciaz surprises by being one of the quickest in the segment. The diesel engine does offer some clatter, like most diesel engines and it does get louder with the rise in revs. But the overall performance is praiseworthy.

Styling was the most challenging aspect for Maruti given that City and Verna, it’s prime rivals, look upmarket and very trendy. But Maruti has managed to create a car with well balanced proportions that looks good from all angles and matches its rivals, even if it does not better them, in the design department.
Ciaz has the largest wheelbase at 2650 mm and also the highest ground clearance at 170 mm among all of its competitors. It measures 4490 mm in length, 1730 mm in width and 1475 mm in height. Unlike the outdated looking SX4, Ciaz is more elegant and definitely more desirable. It looks better than inferred through the pictures. The large glass area also goes a long way in making the car looking bigger and imparting it an airy feel.

The car looks especially big when viewed from the sides and gets a strong shoulder line. The 16 inch alloy wheels found on the top end trim maximise its youthful appeal. The stretched feel for the panels and the blackened B pillars are other striking features of the side profile. The rear of the car bears a striking resemblance to Honda City and the only difference being that Ciaz is more rounded at the back. The stylized rear bumper and the chrome strip on the boot lid are the main highlights of the rear.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Interior

While the exterior remains the talk of the town, Marti Suzuki Ciaz interior impresses too. The company has taken great efforts to devise a refined and practical cabin.
The dashboard has been borrowed from Swift and looks simple and elegant. Nothing over-the-top or too snazzy to be found here. The air of plushness is lent by the dark wood-like strips and chrome highlights all through the cabin. The overall fit and finish is decent and the choice of light colours further enhance the premium appeal. The front seats have been placed slightly high but are comfortable nevertheless. The driver’s seat comes with manual height adjusting feature. A neat multi functional display and an easy-to-read instrument cluster are other impressive interior features. It also has a lot of storage bins scattered all over the cabin.
Space wise too, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz interior is on the greener side, thanks to its large wheelbase. The rear passengers will find ample of knee room and legroom much to their comfort. There are a lot of convenience features too like cup holders for both front and rear passengers, centre armrest and rear armrest with personal reading lamps, etc. A large boot area of 510 litres is also an outcome of the magnified wheelbase. It is the same as that offered by Honda City and larger than that offered by Verna.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Features

One of the shortcoming of SX4 sedan was the lack of good and advanced features and Maruti gets it just right this time with Ciaz. Seems like the company has studied the features of all the rivals before equipping this beautiful sedan with advanced technological features. Alloy wheels, steering mounted controls, high-end touch screen audio system, navigation, climate control system, keyless entry and start, rear AC vents, centre rear armrest with cup holders, Bluetooth telephony, electric OVRMs with auto fold, reversible camera and a retractable blind for rear windscreen – the car carries them all. It misses out on adjustable rear headrests and reach adjust for the steering but these shortcomings are not deal breakers in any way.

On the safety front, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz does not disappoint either. Despite being light, it offers high safety standards. The Total Effective Control technology used by the company in Ciaz makes its body light and rigid at the same time. Features like ABS and dual airbags for driver and front passenger come as standard in all the trims except the base variant. It also offers 3 point seat belts, parking sensors, low fuel warning, seat belt warning, door ajar warning, automatic projector headlamps, front defoggers etc. as additional safety features.

Not so long ago, the name of Honda City evoked awe mixed with admiration. But with the arrival of Hyundai Verna, City got a worthy rival. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz’s entry into this segment has heated up the competition further. Both City and Ciaz look similar at the rear, offer similar boot space and impressive cabin comfort.
The 1.5-litre iVTEC petrol engine of Honda City offers a better power output of a massive 119 bhp and also a more pleasing driving experience. But it is priced significantly higher than Ciaz and falls in the price bracket of Rs. 8.11 lakh to Rs. 12.43 lakh.
Lets talk about the next major competitor of Ciaz – Hyundai Verna. It boasts of a very good equipment list, has a stylish design and both its petrol as well as diesel engine emit a higher power than City and Ciaz. But it gets a smaller wheelbase and also it is not as fuel efficient as Ciaz. In the pricing department too, it lags behind Ciaz.
Volkswagen Vento and Nissan Sunny are other competitors of Ciaz that play in the same segment.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Verdict
A tempting price may be reason enough for buyers to go in for Maruti Suzuki Ciaz but the fact that it matches its rivals in almost all departments, comes as a welcome surprise and thorough delight. It appeals to the style conscious customer as it does to budget conscious one. Overall, it definitely emerges as a very well packaged car that ticks most of the boxes right and warns its close rivals to tighten up their laces. Going by the phenomenal response of the buyers, it looks like a game changer.
