The Baleno nomenclature has been used by Maruti earlier too for its executive sedan introduced in 1999. It was discontinued in 2007 after eight-year run. The company thinks that the average success of that sedan will have no impact on the fortune of this new premium hatchback that was launched in India in October 2015. India is the very first market where Baleno has been launched after it was showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show held in 2015. The company plans to sell this car in as many as 100 countries.

The company wanted to design a car that could be its answer to the likes of Hyundai i20 and Honda Jazz. With Baleno, it looks to achieve that purpose. It looks like a bigger brother to Swift but has a more evolved design. The car is constructed on a completely new generation platform with the objective of reducing its weight and improving its overall performance. It boasts of a stylish and spacious cabin with several new age features. Safety wise, the car is well equipped too.
The company plans to sell this car in as many as 100 countries. Maruti Suzuki Baleno is available in four trims – Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha and offers a choice of both petrol and diesel engines.

Performance of Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The petrol engine puts out a peppy and dynamic performance. Throttle response is good and power delivery is linear. It lends the car a nimble and light feel. The mileage offered by this engine is the best in this class. On the other hand, the diesel engine, that is picked from Swift, feels even peppier and faster, though it is a bit noisy.
What is most commendable about the performance is the ride package. The car feels well planted and firm at high speeds. The McPherson Strut type of suspension at the front and Torsion Beam at the rear work well to absorb most abnormalities of Indian roads. Thanks to the 1700mm ground clearance, the car tackles potholes with ease. The brakes have adequate bite to them and the body roll is minimum.
The CVT version of the car is very powerful and eager. It offers amazing power even at low speeds.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Exterior

The design of Maruti Suzuki Baleno isn’t as flashy as that of its rivals i20 and Jazz, but still appeals due to elements of quirkiness and dynamism. The Liquid Flow design language used by the company makes Baleno curvy. It is not meant to be the part of the herd but stands out with its own identity in a shape that’s quite desirable.
The car measures 3995mm in length which makes it equal to the size of a compact sedan. At 865 Kgs, it is not only the lightest car in the segment but also the longest and the widest.
A striking looking new grille has been fixed at the front along with projector headlamps housing LED daytime running lights. Running from the grille upwards is a chrome outline that integrates neatly with the headlamps cluster. The side profile has a slight bulge that adds to the character of the car. The sloping roofline adds sportiness to the look. The rear of the car is more appealing than the front with LED tail lamps stealing the show. It lends a wide stance to the car. The high mounted rear bumpers house body coloured rear parking sensors and twin reflectors. The higher trims of the car look even better with 16 inch alloy wheels while the mid and the lower trims get 15 inch wheels.

The car is available in seven colour choices namely – Fire Red, Pearl Arctic White, Premium Urbane Blue, Autumn Orange, Ray Blue, Granite Grey and Metallic Premium Silver.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Interiors

An intelligent layout and eye-catching design welcomes you as you step into this premium hatch. Despite having a smaller wheelbase than its rivals like Jazz and i20 at 2520mm, the car is generous on interior space. The sporty and dynamic feel of the car is taken forward by the all-black colour theme. This is complimented well by the glamorous looking instrument cluster, highlighted in blue, and the centre console featuring power and torque display. The fit and finish of the materials is decent. The three spoke steering wheel carries thin chrome pin-striping. It can be adjusted for height and reach manually.
Space inside is ample, courtesy the large 2529mm wheelbase, and the car offers sufficient leg, shoulder and knee room for the rear passengers. The front seats are fairly large and comfortable. Height adjustable feature has been incorporated in the driver’s seat.
The boot space, next only to Jazz in this segment, stands at 339 litres. Overall, the cabin is well appointed.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Features

An aura of magnificence is created by the 4.2 inch touch screen infotainment system, borrowed from S-Cross, hosted by top trims. Maruti has also incorporated Apple CarPlay system for the first time in the country that allows the driver to connect iPhone using Bluetooth or USB and the entire phone is mirrored and displayed on the screen. The user can take phone calls, play music, browse contacts and check mails through this useful feature. Moreover, it can be used to access the Apple Siri Voice Command feature.
Tilt and Telescopic steering, steering mounted audio controls, voice recognition, and reverse parking camera are some other exciting features on this hatch. On the top trims, it is impressive to find new-age features like satellite navigation system, climate control and rear parking camera. Another feature to look out for is the UV Cut glasses that help in cutting the sun’s harmful UV rays by up to 85%.

Maruti surprises in the safety department by equipping Baleno with a host of standard safety features like Dual airbags, ABS and EBD. The body of Baleno has been made up of almost 40% high tensile steel that paves way for added strength and rigidity. The crumple zones of the car absorb energy in an impact and this energy is moved away from the cabin by the strong body frame. Other important safety features hosted by the car include rear defogger, front fog lamps, anti-theft security system, auto-dimming IRVM, rear wiper and washer etc.
Competitors of Maruti Suzuki Baleno

As pointed earlier in this Maruti Suzuki Baleno review, Hyundai i20 and Honda Jazz are the two big rivals of Baleno. Baleno is priced lower than both its rivals. i20 gets an upper hand in the exterior design as well as in interior build quality department and is currently reigning the segment while Baleno trumps it in interior space category and to some extent in ride quality. Jazz from Honda Motors is another very practical offering but loses out on some highly desired features. Baleno hence emerges as strong contender to topple i20 off its throne.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno is in tune with the changing times and offers a wonderful tally of features at a very modest price. It is definitely modern and outright practical. The CVT on offer is the best in class. The CarPlay feature is addictive and unique. The looks are distinctive and the cabin offers everything demanded. It scores good marks on the safety front too. Combine all these goodies with a Maruti stamp of trust and you get just the right product that average Indian buyers look out for.
