Just like Tata Tiago and Tata Hexa, the new offering from Tata, the Tigor is a result of company’s new “IMPACT” design philosophy. The sub-compact sedan was showcased a few months back before its launch and now finally the car has made to the Indian market. Tigor, as defined by the manufacturer signifies design, style and attitude. According to Tata, the Tigor will set a new benchmark for its other competitors with its modern design and advanced features. The segment has been already very competitive and with the introduction of Tigor, the intensity of the competition has increased significantly.

The updated Suzuki Swift Dzire is already on its way to the Indian market and it will further create problems for the other automakers. So, let’s see how the new offering from Tata will make its position in the market.

Tata Tigor Performance

Tigor houses the same powertrain as found in the Tiago. The petrol variant comes with a 1.2-litre ‘Revotron’ unit which delivers 89 hp maximum power while peak torque rest at 114 Nm. This is further mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Whereas, in the diesel option, the 1047cc Revotron engine is equipped which delivers 69 hp maximum power and 140 Nm peak torque. Though the engine is same, Tata has claimed that it has further smoothened the engine by introducing a new balancer shaft in the mix.

With proper insulation, the engine noise will not bother you much but, it is the air and tyre noise which might create hindrance during long journeys. The short drive will be soothing and calm, the gearshift is smooth and the slots are easy to find. The petrol unit however, offers a better ride than the diesel one and with easy swifts, Tigor is a quick car. The steering is light when speed builds up and keeping it on a straight line won’t be an issue. The body rolling will be felt while lane changing but, not much that might create a problem.

Just like any other Tata car, Tigor scores well on the suspension front. City rides will be comfortable and won’t be nasty on bumpy rides but, don’t expect a significant off-roading from this subcompact offering.

Though the Tata Tigor is quite similar to the hatchback sibling, Tiago, the front is designed in a much better way than the hatchback version. The front grille with hexagonal design elements and a twin barrel headlamp looks peppy while the projector low beams and halogen high beams adds to the functionality in a significant manner. Where a lot of new cars are coming up with LED daytime running lights, Tata missed this features on Tigor, which might be a concern for buyers who wish to have all the latest features in their car.

The petrol variant of Tigor is offered with 15-inch diamond cut and black, two-tone wheels that sync extremely well with the rest of the car’s design but, the diesel variant is offered with 14-inch wheels. Cannot comment on the precise reason for reducing the wheel size. But, the rear really makes a big difference. Not only Tata has managed to offer a coupe-like roof but the boot integration in the sub-4 metre category has been done exceptionally well, which makes Tigor stand apart from the competitors. The high-mounted subtle roof spoiler, the tail lamps with end-to-end glowing and sportier bumper makes Tigor a nicely styled car in the segment.

Starting with the dashboard, it is same as found in the Tiago with some extra features. Just like Tiago, the top variant offers colored ac vents which look distinct and striking. The car is offered for domestic use and thus, the company has put special focus on rear seat comfort. Tigor has 50mm longer wheelbase than Tiago, which means extra space for rear occupants. Even the seats are wide enough to fit three adults comfortably.

As Tata has skipped on adding a rear AC vent, there is significant room for the occupants but, it can be also considered as a disadvantage because most of the automakers have started realizing the importance of rear AC vents for the hot and humid climate of India.

The added features in the Tigor over Tiago include a touchscreen infotainment system with Mirrorlink. This helps in getting the navigation and media updates on the screen, leading to driver convenience. The higher variants will be offered with automatic climate control while the rear seats get a flip down hand rest with two cup holders, which has become a necessity nowadays for the rear passengers. The rear seat headrests are non-adjustable but, the foam has been provided enough foam density to give a comfortable position.
