Hyundai has a strong line-up of ten cars running down the Indian roads, with many of them being leaders in their respective segments. Take for example, Hyundai Eon, i10 and i20 range, Elantra and Creta. Now, adding more spice to this already fierce mixture is the soon to launch 2017 Hyundai Verna. The all-new Verna was recently unveiled in China at the 2016 Chengdu Motor Show, soon after its barely covered pictures went viral over the internet. Well, the next-generation Verna looks quite similar to the concept that was revealed earlier this year at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show. Thus, hinting towards an all-new, stylish and upgraded version of Verna in near future.
Hyundai India is still numb about the 2017 Verna launch, but if the rumors are to be believed the car will grace the Indian land somewhere near mid-2017. As there is some time when the new Verna comes and replaces its older version from the market, we thought of finding out which one of two cars is better over the other. Below we have compared both old and new Verna on different platforms like dimension, engine, exterior, interior, and mileage, in order to find the verdict to Hyundai Verna Old vs New comparison.
Next-Generation Hyundai Verna vs. Current Verna – Dimension Comparison
Dimension is an important part of the overall old vs. new scenario. Why? If you ask, it gives the consumer a fair idea about car’s exterior appeal and interior comfort. As Hyundai Verna falls in the sedan category, a good length with a wider stance is appreciable and is good for overall car look and feel. The 2017 Hyundai Verna, as per the China launched model measures 4380 mm in length, 1728 mm wide and 1468 mm tall. The current model is however 5 mm shorter in length, 28 mm less wide and 7mm taller than 2017 Verna. The length and the height, as can be seen, are not changed to an impactful extent, it is, however, the car’s width that has increased by 28 mm ensuring a spacious cabin than before. As for the wheelbase, the new Verna carries a 30 mm enhanced tier spacing, ensuring a better knee room than ongoing Verna.
Crux – As far as dimensions are concerned not much have changed with each component slightly revised for shaping the better car. That brings us a lengthier, wider and shorter (creating a better aerodynamic effect) Verna.
2017 Verna vs. 2016 Verna Engine Comparison
Next, after dimension, it is now time for engine study of the old and new Verna. It is indeed time to see which one of the two holds a powerful mill, producing impressive power and torque figures. The China unveiled next-generation Hyundai Verna holds a choice of two petrol power terrains – one is a 1.4-litre 107 PS power and 135 Nm torque churning mill, while other is a 125 PS and 158 Nm producing 1.6-litre mill. As for the transmission, the new Verna 1.4-litre mill is available with a 5-speed manual gearbox. As for the bigger and better 1.6-liter option, it can be paired with 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission depending on the variant.
For the Indian market, we are also expecting current model’s diesel engines to accompany the above-mentioned petrol mills. Hyundai will offer them with transmission option of 6-speed manual and automatic.
Crux – As of now, the under hood configuration of old and new Verna seems to remain unchanged, with the same set of petrol and diesel mills. However, who knows that for Indian market the brand has different plans, but it is too early to say anything.
All-new Verna vs. Old Verna Exterior Comparison
It seems as if the car has evolved over the years and this time around it’s very well visible through the next-generation Verna mature stance. Like seen in the 2016 Hyundai Elantra, the all-new Verna is also bestowed with Hyundai’s latest Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy. Due to which the new model features some heavy but well-accepted changes. The 2017 Verna front profile for instance, now carries a large hexagonal grille that is a good change over earlier placed simple two-plate chrome one. Also, the fog lamps now get a better looking black cladding placement, however the earlier triangular fog lamp shape is missed. The front bumper and projector headlamps with LED DRL’s look both sportier and attractive.
The side profile also seems to carry many noteworthy changes that give Verna its elite class feel. Firstly, the side now shows lesser contour work, redesigned alloy wheels, rear door and C-pillar. Also, the roofline now seems flowy, easing out smoothly into the rear, thus giving new Verna lifeback like body shape. At its rear end, one can notice some heavy yet impressive changes like repositioned number plate, curvaceous bumper and re-styled LED tail lamp with broader coverage.
Crux – New Verna is surly a better site over its current ongoing version. The car with its mature looks captivates people instantly.
2017 Hyundai Verna vs. 2016 Hyundai Verna Cabin Comparison
Verna’s cabin like its exterior has grown both in space and amenity front. As discussed above, 2017 Verna is a car with better dimensions which means that it will offer an airy cabin with larger rear and impressive leg and knee-room. On the design front, the new Verna is elegant and simplified over the ongoing model. The reason we believe is its adequate placement that does not create a cluster and cramped cabin feel, an issue with the current model.
The steering wheel is new and seems to have taken inspiration from the Elite i20, also the center console now looks well organized with fewer controls. Unlike the present model that features a dual-tone theme, the one displayed in China was an-all black wrapping with silver accents as highlights.
On the amenity front, apart from a new touch screen infotainment system, we are expecting the car to offer features like reverse parking, climate control, navigation, cruise control, start/stop button and a sunroof.
Crux – The interior of next-generation Verna looks spacious and holds a longer list of features over the current model. Plus, it is more comforting for the passengers.
2017 Verna vs. Ongoing Verna Mileage Comparison
The 2016 Hyundai Verna is known to deliver mileage figure of 17.4 KMPL with its petrol engine. While for the diesel option the mileage rating of current model stands at 23.9 to 24.8 KMPL. The said figures are expected to witness some additions with the next-generation Verna entering the picture. The expected mileage for petrol engines being 18-19 KMPL and 24-15 KMPL for diesel mills.
But these are just assumptions, however if the India market gets the same set of engines as before, it is even possible that they come tuned with better mileage pouring engines.
Crux – As for now, the 2016 Verna seems to outrun the next-generation model on the fuel efficiency front.
Hyundai Verna Old vs New Price Comparison
As per market speculations and what can be guessed from the 2017 Verna spec chart, it seems that when launched in India, Verna price chart will witness a hike. However, it is for sure to remain competitive and in-line with its competitor’s price.
Crux – Prices are expected to witness a hike that can be justified with its improved spec sheet.
Hyundai Verna Old vs New Comparison Verdict
A quick glance at the above written comparison between old and new Verna clears one thing out that the 2017 Verna is nothing like its previous form. Apart from sharing mills (as expected), from its exterior to interior space every thing looks changed, a change that is for good. The car now features Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language and an array of features that were a miss in the previous model. With the expected mid-2017 Hyundai Verna launch once entering the market it’ll sure give good competition to its rivals like Honda City, Volkswagen Jetta and Suzuki Ciaz.
