After series of negative sentiments for the bigger diesel powered vehicles, Mercedes India has now launched a petrol version of its luxury SUV, tagged Mercedes-Benz GLE 400 4MATIC. The car is to be sold as a CBU product initially and later, the manufacturer might start the local assembly of the SUV. This is the first time that the German automaker has introduced a petrol variant for the GLE Class, previously the option was available in the M-Class. The new variant of the highest selling SUV of the company is priced at INR 74.90 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The technical highlights of Mercedes-Benz GLE 400 4MATIC include five different driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Slippery, Individual and Off-road. The SUV also features an AIRMATIC suspension with Adaptive Dampening System that raises the ground clearance by 232 mm and reduces automatically to 15 mm at high speeds. Other standard features include LED headlamps, electric sunroof, memory package for electronically operated driver and passenger seats, and 360-degree camera for parking assistance. Inside this Mercedes SUV, one would find Harman Kardon audio system, COMAND infotainment system with 7-inch display steering mounted controls, and comfortable leather wrapped seats.

Under the hood, there are two choices offered by the automaker, a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder unit with 204 PS power and 500 Nm torque. The other is the 3.0-litre V6 engine which produces 258 PS power and peak torque of 620 Nm. Both these engines of Mercedes-Benz GLE 400 4MATIC are coupled with 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission as standard. The safety features of this SUV include Crosswind Assist Attention, Active Parking Assist and Brake Assist, and 6-airbags. For now, Mercedes GLE 400 4MATIC faces competition from its key rivals like BMW X5, Audi Q7 and soon to be launched Jeep Cherokee.
